Scrapbooking Basics

It is a passion for many people and more and more are trying this hobby every day – scrapbooking in the traditional sense is the mother of all scrapbooking and has been used far longer than digital scrapbooking. It is a well-known fact – this long-standing activity is a favorite amongst people of all ages who want to have and treasure memorabilia of both themselves and their family or friends – scrapbooks that document particular achievements, the documentation of a special event or traveling adventures are just some of the type of scrapbooks you can find.

For those of you who are new to scrapbooking, or for those who already have a digital scrapbook – the information you find here will be extremely helpful if you want to begin or learn the basics of traditional scrapbooking.

Really – don’t be put off by all of the high-priced manuals or materials found in your local craft store. One thing that scrapbooking doesn’t have to be is expensive – if you know how to go about it the right way. Our guide is a simple one in the basics – but it is straightforward and makes this pastime all the more achievable.

Gathering Your Supplies

In the beginning, you will need just a few essentials, then if you want to progress and make this a regular hobby, you might want to extend on your basic kit. It would be advisable like in most ventures to set a budget. Scrapbooking supplies can be overwhelming and it is easy to dwindle away the coins in your pocket – have a budget and stick with it! Before you make your purchases, double check that the materials you intend to buy are both acid and lignin free so your photos can be safely preserved.

Some of the essentials are as follows:

* Writing Tools – The more the merrier. Don’t stick to blacks and blues – equip yourself with a variety of colored pens to make your scrapbook an attractive one.

* Photo Tabs/Splits – A better alternative to using a glue stick, photo tabs will secure photos but also allow for a clean removal if necessary.

* Scissors! – Yes of course, you will use them no end as with cropping photos. You won’t get far without them but in time, you might want to upgrade to some paper trimmers, which make the job hassle-free.

* Album and Sheet Protectors – You have lots of choice when choosing an album and sheet protectors. It all boils down to personal preference in terms of size and color. A 12×12 is popular as you can get more photos and decorations on one page. If you prefer a minimalist scrapbook then go smaller.

Some Techniques To Send You On Your Merry Way

It is just a guess – but you are probably reading this because you wanted an alternative to buying a scrapbooking magazine – makes sense: you save both time and money by doing so. The internet is a great resource for scrapbooking techniques and it would be wrong not to share some of our knowledge with you – here are a few techniques to whet your appetite:

Using Patterns:

To add some pizzazz to your scrapbook, get wise in the art of using patterns. It is simple enough, most of us learnt tracing in pre-school so we can probably pick it up again. Lay the tracing paper over your chosen pattern and keep it still whilst you follow the lines with a pencil. Now you will need some transfer paper to place under the patterned paper and tracing and draw the pattern.

Embellishment Ideas:

Less of a technique, more of a list of ideas to help you get creative when decorating your scrapbook. Here are a few items that you could use:

* Bows

* Ribbon

* Confetti

* Raffia

* Glitter

* Lace

* Beads

* Dried Flowers

* Gems

* Buttons

* Eyelets

So now would be a good time to let your imagination fire up and practice the art of traditional scrapbooking!
