How To Make Card Toppers With Scrapbook Patterned Paper by Karen Dimmick
With just a week to go to Thanksgiving, the holiday season is nearly upon us! I’ve already started making my Christmas cards, what about you? To help you get started this article will show you how to make card toppers the inexpensive way with all that scrapbook patterned paper you have laying around the place.
It’s great to be able to reduce your expenses during the holidays, which is why these techniques use what you’ve already got in the house, rather than having to go out and buy more.
We’re just going to concentrate on the card toppers here, but if you need to make your own card bases as well, you can do that with paper you have around your house, just by doubling up and sticking sheets together to get a strong enough card blank.
For the base of the topper you’ll need some card stock. If you don’t have any, take a look through your junk mail, old business cards, appointment cards from your hairdresser or dentist and the like. Since you’re going to be covering the base fully, it doesn’t matter what’s on the card stock. I reuse or cut shapes out from various different card stock weight items around the house.
To create your basic inchies card toppers, simple use your one inch paper punch (or scissors) to create three one inch square card weight bases out of whatever you have handy. Next you’re going to take some of your scrapbook patterned paper scraps that are just larger than one inch square and completely cover each of the bases with your paper and some adhesive.
Decorate your small card toppers with some natural items you can find laying around outside (like small white feathers) or some embellishments you already have in your card making supplies kit.
When it comes to your larger card toppers, take an old business or appointment card, which are about the right size so you don’t have to cut them, then once again cover them completely with some of your scrapbook patterned paper, or even some aluminum foil.
You’ll want to decorate the larger topper with some bigger items as they will be the focal point of your card. One of the things you can do is take some matchsticks, cutting them to the required length and create a ‘manger’ outline to stick on your topper base. Alternatively you can tie a Christmas ribbon around your topper and make it look like a present!
